I am going to install a new bathtub, and the plumber recommended Americast by American Standard. I googled this and found a lot of complaints. However, most seem to be dated 2004 and older. Perhaps by now they have improved. Can anyone give me an up-to-date opinion on the quality of these tubs?

I think the Americast is a great product IF it is set in a bed of mortar or structolite as it has a tendency to creek and flex a little even though they say it's similar to cast iron tub.

I prefer to install cast iron tubs myself... the average cast iron tub, like a Kohler villager is very reasonable price (325.00) and will never flex or creek as it is 100% solid. Most plumbers don't like to install because they are heavy... but overall not really as bad as they think with help from a coworker.

Anyway, Americast is fine product that will last for years to come if set in mortar or structolite... cast iron is better... my opinion!

American Standard says do not use mortar to stabilize the americast, because the mortar reacts with the tub material and voids a warranty. I was told also by their techs, that the tub will flex with or without mortar foundation. That flex prohibits putting tile around the tub, since the tub movement will cause the tile to fall off.

YUP!

Americast is definitely NOT a cast iron tub!

I always use STRUCTOLITE and never have had issues with flex! I have also seen mortar used and again... better than it was without the support.

Anyway, if mortar not recommended then use the structolite... great base of support and can't possibly react with the americast material!
