Hard Drive Manufacturer for HP / Compaq
Does anyone know who generally manufactures the hard drives for new HP and Compaq notebooks?

I'm looking at an HP Pavilion DV9819WM, and a Compaq F768WM.

I went on live chat with HP Support, but they wouldn't tell me.

And yes, I've googled the question every way I can phrase it.

I realize there may not be a standard, but am hoping there is, and someone knows.

    Thanks all...

Thanks SG. That's exactly what I was hoping for. Have had good luck with WD.

If your looking to replace the drive, you do not have to stay with the OEM brand, WD's tend to be priced higher than most equal drives, and higher than some better drives also.

    Just something to think about.

It has been my experience that HP uses predominantly Seagate and Maxtor, which have better components, better warranty and run cooler than Western Digital. I have run across HP and Compaq machines with Hitachi drives, but I have *never* seen one with Western Digital, despite rumors to the contrary. HP/Compaq has a contract with Seagate for HDD, both internal their Media Bay removable drives.

You are one of the lucky ones that has not suffered from the high failure rate of Western Digital drives. Consider yourself very fortunate in that aspect.

I have hp pavilion, I think it was a maxtor I had in it, but bought a western digital. If you say they have a high failure rate, what is the duration of their life? Mine's not quite a year old.

Funny, I have an HP, a compaq, a MediaVault and a Media Smart server. All but the server came with WD drives. The compaq is about 4 yrs old now and no HD problems, the HP is about 20 months with no problems, The Mediavault is a bit over a year and I added a second WD drive to it. No problems.
