I have had very mild spotting, a couple of drops for 2 days, between my periods for 7 years. My doctor did a hysteroscopy and d&c and removed 4 polyps 4 days ago. I am extremely modest and have been traumatized by having this procedure! I've heard the polyps can come back and was wondering how often they do come back and secondly how many times you can have a d&c without affecting your fertility? I also wanted to know why my doctor did a d&c since I have normal periods and don't experience any heavy bleeding. This has caused me extreme anxiety, panic attacks, and I have been taking a sedative, but this has not helped.. . what would happen if I just left the polyps should they return?

They can come back, may take a year or more... may happen after several months, and a repeat D & C may be done. Some women will also find hormone therapy may work at preventing their recurrence... although that may not be an option for everyone.

The polyps themselves may play a role in fertility for some women, so leaving them may not be an option if you are wanting to become pregnant. While they usually are completely benign, they really would need to be checked out as they can sometimes be a helpful tool in determining if precancerous cells are present.

Your doctor may have gone with a D & C if he noticed the polyps during an exam... or if he suspected the possibility of polyps due to the irregular bleeding between periods. Since he found several, it was probably a wise decision. He'll go over any findings with you once he gets information back from having them checked.
