    Dogs and thunderstorms
Why is it that people say to stay away from dogs during thunderstorms?

Dogs can get stressed during thunder storms, but I have never heard to stay away from them. Mine is not affected by thunder or fireworks like some dogs are.

One reason may be that as humans we want to comfort our pets when they are scared of something. So we tell them it will be okay, stroke them, and basically encourage the fearful behavior.
You see dogs hear "It is okay to be afraid of that scary noise" and we praise them by petting. The best thing is to ignore the pet or get them focused on something else.

Training with food rewards is a good way to start. The dog associates the thunderstorms with boneless skinless chicken bits. Suddenly, storms are a great thing!

Also, a good product to use is Homeopet Anxiety Drops
Anxiety TFLN promotes a sense of calm in animals fearful of Thunderstorms, Fireworks, windstorms and Loud Noises. Great product for the summer and New Years fireworks and gun shots. It will buffer the noise they hear and the changes caused by the approaching storm.

HomeoPet is a product that is chemical free, safe for dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, hamster and pot bellied pigs of all ages. Manufactured under a FDA registered process. No known side effects from any of our products. Twelve years of researching only the best ingredients from all over the world. All HomeoPet products are liquid and given internally.
