I am wanting to get a Greek Passport so I can live in a EU country and work. My grandfather was born there and came to the USA young. I have visited family there in the past. What do I do if my grandfather did not have a birth certificate? I know the family is registered in the village they came from but how do I get that on a legal document?

Nancy, if your grandfather was born in Greece, then he will be registered in the military records of the municipality he was born in - it's as simple as that. All males born in Greece are registered in their municipality for military purposes in what is called the "Mitroo Arrenon".

Note that your grandfather must have been born in Greece proper [i.e. sovereign Greek territory at the time of his birth]. If he emigrated to the USA with a Greek passport, then he was most likely born on Greek territory.

Once you get that paper from the municipality, then you can go down the process of getting your grandfathers' marriage certificate, your parent's birth certificates, their wedding certificate, your own birth certificate, etc.

However, unless you can find your grandfather's registration in the municipality in Greece, you will not be able to go down that process. Good luck!

    Question moved to own post.

Plese do not place your question as a answer to someone else's question, you seldom get any answers that way and really confuse a thread.

These are not chat sites or blogs so each question should be its own question, Now if you have follow up info place it as a answerr to your own question.

    Thank you
