    New dog got Parvo now my pups have it too!
    I had gotten a male dog from a breeder. She told me he had been fully vaccinated. He became my best buddy and went everywhere with me. One day he started getting sick but I thought he ate something bad when he was outside. 2 days later he tested positive for Parvo. I had 2 13 week old pups in the kitchen.. they both got it and so far 1 has already died. I also have a female with pups in my bedroom they are 2 weeks old. What to do now? Have supportive therapy for older dog and 1- 13 week pup! Someone said they thought there might be a new strain of Parvo and that is why the vaccinated dogs may get it.

    Was this dog "fully vaccinated" by the breeder or a vet? Were the vacs at the right time? Spaced at the right intervals?

    Older dogs usually just have Parvo that is like the flu for us. Treat him with fluids and antibiotics from the vet. Same can be done for the pup. It may or may not work.

    Were the puppies mothers vaccinated?

    Clean your house with 32:1 water and bleach. It is contagious to the puppies for the next 6 months or so. I wouldn't let the pups or mom out ANYWHERE near ANY place the Parvo dogs/pups have been!

    Last what type of contract did you get from the other breeder? Are your dogs bred on purpose? Can you sue this breeder for the cost of damage?

    I contacted several teaching hospitals in regards to a possible disease issue we were having in our area and according to them we do not have any new diseases with the symptoms you are describing(they are similar to ours). We do have many new cases of Brucellosis. Of course I'm sure you know that nasty bugger since you breed.

    Did the breeder give the puppies the shot his/herself? If she didn't take proper measures with the vaccinations to keep them cool at all times before giving them, they could have been rendered useless. The breeder might have believed the puppies were vaccinated, you might even have proof, but that doesn't mean they were given correctly.

    Here is a link to a site I found;

    Parvo FAQs

    Although this link also states that parvo only survives for 6 months, I have heard that it can live for years in dog feces, so please take all precautions with your dogs.

    Good luck, and I'm sorry to hear of your loss.

    Just an update... a not so new-strain (affecting more adult dogs) of the well know Parvo Virus emerged years ago (7 yrs in fact) but Schering-Plough an animal health pharmacuetical company says their vaccination has had protection for at least 2 yrs. So if your breeder had the pups vaccinated by a veterinarian that uses the Galaxy DA2PP by Schering-Plough they should have been covered. Adult dogs do get Parvo, but it affects them like the flu; not the same devastating affects that it has on puppies.

    Parvo hasn't been around all that long and it has undergone several mutations. Unfortunately it will most likely continue to do so.
    I hope all is well as can be expected at your home.
