Smilies symbols in MS Office 2003
When I type :) to insert a smilie face it actually displays what looks like a symbol with a palm tree on a beach and if I type :( to insert a frown face I get a symbol that looks like a magnifying glass. Any ideas...

    Thanks.

When you say font set do you mean what font is being used?

The insertion of "smilies" is actually a function called AUTOCORRECT being used. It is usually font-proof, but not always.

Click on TOOLS >AUTOCORRECT OPTIONS and check the entries for your smilies. They may need correcting.

Thank you. The smilie auto-correct options are not correct. My only question is how do I change the auto-correct option to replace the text with the smilie icon.

    1. Open a new blank doc
    2. Click INSERT > SYMBOL
    3. Font = Wingdings
    4. Highlight each of the smilies you want (second row I believe) and click INSERT (there are three total)
    5. Click OK
    6. Highlight the first inserted smilie
    7. With the smilie highlighted, click on TOOLS > AUTOCORRECT OPTIONS
    8. (see pic below)Where is says Replace: fill out the typed entry and make sure "formatted" is selected, then click on the REPLACE button (click ADD if there is no old entry, the button will be in the same place as REPLACE)
    9. Make sure you do all the variations, for instance a normal smilie is both :) and :-)
    10. Click OK
    11. Highlight the next smilie and repeat steps 7-10 for each
    12. Now in your document, type :) and see if the smilie appears properly
