    Irregular periods
I am nearly 44 and suddenly this month I have already had 3 periods in 3 weeks. What might be causing this and do I need to see a doctor?

I hate to break it to you, but your having pre-menapausal symptoms. Some women get them as early as in their 20s or 30s. So consider yourself lucky? I just turned 30 last month so my time is coming, sooner or later too!

Perimeopause is usually consistent with missing periods, not having multiple periods in a month. Have you had your yearly female exam recently? If not, I suggest you do so. There could be many reasons this is happening, however, without the proper lab work I can't accurately give you a diagnosis.

Simple things could be stress... diet... exercise... low iron levels...

Then there are more serious things like cervical cancer.

    Please get this checked out.

Actually, its both. Pre-menapause will cause you to have irregular periods, on and off, having several in a month plus skipping them, until they eventually start skipping them entirely before they go away completely. Wouldn't hurt to get checked out though. I'm sure your doctor will just find a nice way to remind you of the lovely effects of menapause. :-)

Glad you disagree with me, but as a medical professional in women's health, I can tell you this is not the norm. Slowly the periods begin to fade in perimenopause. Once there is not a period in a one year time, this is when it is called menopause.

The average age of menopause in the US is age 51.

Thanks for your help and I will get myself checked. Can I be checked while during the period or do I have to wait for it to stop? Anyway, thanks again.;)
