    Smoothing wall texture
I have purchased a new home in which most rooms are textured half way down from the ceiling. The previous owner painted the upper portions to match the bottom. My husband wants to chair rail all. I do not. Do we need a professional or can we smooth out the top areas to match the bottom?

You can remove the texture material but it will not always come down without nicks and dents that need touch up. A large 4" wall.floor scraper should do the trick. Wetting the textured material with a spray of soapy water will help.

We had a similar chore when we moved in. Ballenger is right.

Also, we found a power sander (KMart - $25) and used a sheetrock sanding screen (just cut it to fit the sander)... worked well, if quite dusty.

You could just add another layer of wall plaster and finish it smoothly with a steel trowel

My 1920 plaster ceilings look like merangue peaks. I don't know how many layers of plaster have been gooped on to likely cover the cracks. The foyer has it on the walls too. I'm not exaggerating to write that you would snag a sweater if you leaned against that wall. The 'merangue peaks' could put a...

Our Bathroom was wall papered, which we took off using fabric softener and pelling it away. There is now the glue/mastic stuff here and there on the wall. How important is it to remove all of it if we are going to paint it with textured paint? (I believe we will be putting the texture beads in...

I have a twenty year old kitchen ceiling which is a medium orange peel texture, painted in semi-gloss. I need, because of making it larger by removing a wall, to make the texture a knock down. Smoothing textured walls [ 8 Answers ]

Help! We have heavily textured walls which catch all the dust. I would like to smooth out the walls, do I use "sheetrock topping joint compound"? Or something else? Do I put this on in thin layers or in one thick layer? This is hard work for an old lady, any advice would be so gratefully received....
