Leak in the bathroom from apartment above
For many years my bathroom ceiling was getting wet and plaster pealed, and it has being repaired 3 times, the old plaster removed and replaced with new. But, the problem did not go away, in the recient 2 months, the water was showing up and finally I get waterfalls every day from the ceiling, which made a gap around the pipe in the ceiling. The repair man was here and he went upstairs and ran water in both bathtub and sink, but , for some reason, the water never came down to my bathroom. I get water fall/gashing every day for about 5 minutes in large quantities, maybe 2+ gallons during the short period. The person, who lives upstairs, has the switch from bath to shower broken for a long time- is that could be a cause of the leak? Even superintendent cannot figure out what is this and made a new appointment for the next week.
MY QUESTION- WHAT COULD CAUSE THE LEAK OF HUGE Among OF WATER EVERY DAY ? The building has 8 floors, and all apartments been checked for the leak.

LaraFish - There should be a access panel behind each of the bathrooms oppsit wallfrom where the water comes out of the wall, they should start at the top floor and pull the panels off and have someone in the bathroom to turn on the water on the faucet hot and cold both and run the shower also ,and the one on the other side of the wall with a flashlight to start watching and looking ,checkingall the pipes and drains.Somewhere down the floors they will find the leaks , the water is probably fllowing the pipes down through the floors!! Another way would be is when it happens is to go to the apts aboveyou and find out who just used the water or the drains and you could trace it down to there,. Try this and then let us all know what you find!! Being that it happens every day at about the same time I would say that someone is takeing a bath, GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS ::: F.B.E.

Suggest to the superintendent that he check the tub overflow gasket. If the residents upstairs has a defective shower diverter it is quite likely that they are using the tub. If the tub is filled to the max and then the person gets in the tub, water flows out the overflow pipe. A dried or defective overflow gasket can go for years undetected. It only becomes a problem when the tub is overflowed. The way you described the leak makes me suspect that this is what is happening.

The test is simple, fill the tub to overflowing and watch what happens..
