    Looks like the underneath of where you would have pulled grass up and the dried roots are flattened...

    It's definitely a micrograph (magnified). I'm guessing a staple in a piece of cardboard.

    I think it's metal and the material it's in is some kind of paper or cardboard...

    Cool! I won something! And ordinaryguy started a conversation about evolution IN Biology! What a day.:)

    When I was a kid, my father used to show my sister and me the cover of Science magazine, which always has some weird image, and make us try to guess what it was. This reminds me of that, fun. Thanks!
