How do I get car title from a private party
I bought a car from a friend. Have had the car for over a year and it is paid off. The friend said he was working on getting the lost title but I never got it. He has since moved to another state and refuses to return my call. I now have a car that I have no title to cannot register or get plates for, sell or drive. What are my options? And what is my legal recourse. I live in Texas.

Are you saying they never put the car in your name?
If that is the case tell them that if you ever get in a serious wreck they will be held largely responsible because the car is titled in their name.
I hope you have a receipt saying it is paid in full.

What kind of documents do you have to prove the purchase?

If you have anything like a bill of sale, or some such document, I would contact the DMV, and see what is required to apply for an abandoned vehicle title.

Bigger question would be, how have you been able to register and license this vehicle for the past two years?

Correct he never put in my name. I do have the bill of sale. He has the lost title and won't take care of it. Am going to go to DMV Monday and see about the abandoned vehicle title. Thanks!
