Going from a garbage disposal to just a drain
How do you switch from a garbage disposal with a dishwasher to just a plain drain with a dishwasher?

    Hi DP:

You will need to drop out the disposal, purchase a new sink strainer and a dishwasher tailpiece (can be plastic or brass)... see pictures below. You will also need to deal with the electrical wires in a safe manner.. I recommend a junction box with a cover screwed to the side of base cabinet and capping wires in there).

The sink strainer gets plumbers putty under the rim of strainer (above sink)... the rubber washer and cardboard washer are used UNDER the sink... RUBBER washer against sink first. I recommend that you get the strainer with basket and 1.5" nut ....not the strainer with a 3.5" nut... ok? The 1.5" nut is a much easier installation!!

Then the dishwasher tailpiece attaches to the strainer (strainer washer goes on top of the dishwasher tailpiece). Then will need to transition from dishwasher tailpiece to PVC pipe via an 1.5" pvc desanco fitting (see pic.) if PVC and then to pvc ptrap... or by a CLAMP if copper or galvanized pipes or other material!

Let me know if this all made sense...

Different areas, different names! In my area we call that a "branch tailpiece".

Grease in garbage disposal - blocked drain [ 6 Answers ]

I share a room in an old house. In the first few weeks I put no more than 1/2 cup of grease in the garbage disposal and chased it with hot water. The sink has 2 basins. Now when we run water in either one, the water came back up the other - much dirtier than it went down. The landlord says...

Water won't drain beyond garbage disposal [ 1 Answers ]

I put some freshly cooked chicken strips(that didn't smell right) down the disposal and it clogged up. Thinking it was just a mass glob of bad chicken blocking the drainage, I unscrewed the hole under the pipes to snake the pipes, and of course got a big blob of ground chicken. Now I can't get...

My garbage disposal has about 2" of water in its sink that won't drain. The disposal itself runs, but the water doesn't drain. No water comes up the adjoining sink. We've plunged it but that hasn't worked. Any experience or suggestion re this type of problem? Thanks in advance.

Suddenly the side of my kitchen sink that contains the garbage disposal won't drain. The garbage disposal is empty, it seems to work just fine and the other side of the sink drains beautifully. Plunging doesn't work because of the dishwasher run-off vent. Am I safe in assuming that the clog...
