We have a GE GSH25SGPC SS refrigerator which has been working just fine for the last 4 years or so. I noticed recently, however, that whenever the refrigerator door is closed, either normally or forcefully (we've got little kids) that it causes the freezer door open about 1/8 to 1/4 inch, depending on how hard the other door was shut.

This is wasting energy, of course.

I think the solution might be as simple as adjusting the closing force on the freezer door so that it holds the seal better. I'm reasonably satisfied that it's not the actual seal that is the problem because it passes the "dollar bill" test and seems to stick well enough to the door frame. It's just when the other door is closed with less than gentle force that the freezer seal breaks.

My fridge would do the same thing. It has something to do with how forceful you are when shutting the fridge door that makes the freezer door pop open a tad. Nothing short of putting brakes on the kids is your answer. I tried fiddling with my fridge door and nothing happened to the freezer door. You'll just have to GENTLY close the fridge door and teach the kids to do the same. Or try moving things away from the freezer door and see if that helps. I know with my setup that helped somewhat and the freezer door didn't pop open quite as much as it used to.

Update:

Adding weight to the freezer door helped somewhat but it would still pop open about 1/8 inch. I had ran across a suggestion on a different site that mentioned dry door seals causing a similar problem and the solution involved smearing a thin coat of petroleum jelly on the door seal.

So, I did and it works like a charm!
