    Battery keeps dying, any suggestions?
 I have a sears riding mower. My battery keep dying.
I bought a new battery and it worked for a few times then died again. I have to start it with the battery charger now.

I remove the negative terminal after each use so it can't be a short draining the battery correct?

Maybe its now being charged when running?
I can't find anything about a alternator on the sears mower, is there one?
    Help Please:confused:

I would guess that it is something else like an alternator
If it is the battery it should be under a pro rated warranty
There are places that test batteries too like Advanced Auto.

Is the Alternator part of the starter on these mowers?

I always heard you either have a starter or an alternator
I really don't know much about the difference.

They can be checked too at Advanced Auto.

I think there are a couple other things that can be the problem like lose wire or solenoid
But I would start with checking the alternator/starter first.

The starter simply turns the engine while starting. Then it just sits and enjoys the ride. The alternator is called a stator. The stator charges the battery. The stator is located underneath the flywheel.

OK, so I checked the battery and its good. Next I tried starting by shorting out the soliniod, no luck.

So I am thinking it's the alternator or starter?

Its it possible that my starter was going bad and by jumping it to start it the 10-15 times I killed my starter?

I found the soliniod and starter. I found the alternator in the diagram but have no idea where it is on the tractor.
You said its behind the flywheel? Does this mean I have to take the tranny off to get to it?
The craftmen diagram is not very good. The alternator looks like a hoop with rolers on it.
    Does this sound correct?
