Cash dividends on preferred and common stock
I have been working on the same problem for 4 hours.

Does anyone have Accounting experience that could help me with this?

I don't even know how to get started. The problems in the book were not helpful

Caron Corporation pays dividends at the end of each year. The dividends that it paid for 2003 was $80,000, 2004 was $60,000, and 2005 was $180,000.

Calculate the total amount of dividends the Caro Corporation paid in each of these years to its common stockholders and its preferred stock holders under the following capital structures:

    1. 20,000 shares of $100 par, 6 percent noncumulative preferred stock and 60,000 shares of $10 par common stock

    2. 10,000 shares of $100 par, 7 percent cumulative preferred stock and 60,000 shares of $10 par common stock. No dividends were in arrears at the beginning of 2003.

Here's another post I did about dividend distributions. You can start by reading it, use it as a kind of example and see how far you can get. Then you can post whatever you come up with and we can go from there.

Aak, if I'm going to keep referring people to that thread, I need to include the correction. Beginning of my first post where it says 10% of the number of shares should be 10% of the total par value of the stock.

The records of Hoffman Company reflected the following balances in the stockholders' equity accounts at December 31, 2009:

Common stock, par $14 per share, 33,000 shares outstanding.

Preferred stock, 8 percent, par $12 per share, 7,500 shares outstanding.

    Retained earnings, $216,000.

On January 1, 2010, the board of directors was considering the distribution of a $67,000 cash dividend. No dividends were paid during 2008 and 2009.

    Required:

Determine the total and per share amounts that would be paid to the common stockholders and to the preferred stockholders under two independent assumptions (Round your Dividend per share to 2 decimal places. Omit the "$" sign in your response):

    a. The preferred stock is noncumulative.
    b. The preferred stock is cumulative.

    a. Noncumulative:
    Preferred Common
    Total dividend $ $
    Dividend per share $ $

    b. Cumulative:
    Preferred Common
    Total dividend $ $
    Dividend per share $ $

    Answer for Caron corporation

    For Non- Cumulative preferred dividend
    First calculate total paid dividend by: ( $100 *0.06 * 20,000) =$ 120,000

Year Total Preferred Dividend Common dividend
    2003 80,000 80,000 -
    2004 60,000 60,000 -
    2005 180,000 120,000 -

For commulative preferred stock... I'm in trouble too... One thing for this I can assure is that to find total dividend is the same procedure.
If any one can suggest any answer... email me at [email protected]
    Thanks

mubasherseyal - we don't just answer people's homework around here, so please don't. If you are wanting help with the problem you should start your own thread instead of tagging onto another. This thread is 2 years old and should be closed.

Also read posts 2 & 3. If you're going to post on a thread, it's a good idea to read the prior posts - did you go to the link and follow the information I gave there on how to do this?
