Dear Members,

My wife is pregnant (13 weeks complete) and a couple of days back, she discovered that there was some bleeding (very light blood stains). The next moment we went to consult a doctor and she told that the fetus has now shifted to the anterior part (lower part) of the uterus from the posterior part (upper part) and she can bleed at any time again. All this was the result of some exersion on the part of my wife.

She is taking complete bed rest these days but I am really worried. Can someone comment on the criticality of this matter and please suggest how to cope with this situation.

The bleeding is possibly from the placenta being anterior, which would cause baby to be also. Usually the placenta will grow in the posterior portion, or back portion, of the uterus and the baby will follow. Anterior means more towards the front of the uterus instead of the lower part, but the doctor may be stating that the placenta is low lying, which would mean it is located in the lower part of the uterus. This is a more common reason for some bleeding in pregnancy. It may or may not be an issue depending on its location and how much bleeding is involved. In many cases a low lying placenta will shift higher and posterior later in the pregnancy and be of no issue at all. If it remains very low, as in covering or partially covering the cervix, it would mean a c-section would be necessary at about 38-39 weeks as you can't deliver the placenta before the baby. Another scan would be done about 33 weeks to see if the placenta has shifted. Other than that, an anterior placenta and baby can make it a little more difficult to pick up the heartbeat sometimes and mom may not feel as strong of kicks as she might otherwise.
