    2001 Ram overdrive not disengaging.
My engine light come on at 100K miles. Had it serviced and they turned it off. Subsequently having problems when slowing down, overdirve does not disengage and experience a strong vibration from engine laboring. It goes away immediately when OD button is pushed to dissengage. Anyone with similar experience please e-mail to [email protected]

A lot of Chrysler tech's are familiar with Dodge Ram overdrive problems. Starting in 2003 Dodge released updated clutches, seals and piston for the overdrive units. The good thing is that the transmission does not have to be removed, the overdrive unit can be removed from the back of the transmission, after removing the transfer case. Not a job for the average do-it-yourselfer though, as there are some special tools needed. The other option is to get a used overdrive unit newer than 2003 as this will have the updates already. I should note that there are 3 different transmissions used on the 2001. 2 of them use the same overdrive unit. If you have a 1500 4WD then chances are you have the overdrive unit with all the problems. I would think that it would be cheaper to have the unit overhauled rather than have a used one installed as they can be expensive. Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that there is a possibility that the overdrive shift solenoid is sticking. Have a computer diagnostics done to make sure. If not then the overdrive unit is at fault.
