Hi, I was wondering about proper feeding plans for dogs. I wanted to know about how much, and how many times a day I should feed my dog. I don't want him to become unhealthy and chubby, by feeding him too much. But I just want to feed him enough so he can be healthy, happy, and have plenty of energy. What might you suggest? :)

I believe it depends on the type of dog he is and how much activity he is involved in.

My little laid back pom mix does not eat as much as my little hyper chi mix.

If you are feeding dry food then I would suggest starting on the back of the bag also in the dog section you will find a chart. "Long live your dog" it will give you a good indication as to what a dogs bodys should look like. YOu should also find a link to Woodhaven Labs they have some very good articles on you dog. You may find it an interesting.

It's almost impossible to tell you what is "right" for your dog, since calorie content of brands vary, and activity level of dogs vary. For example, I have a 65-pound greyhound that gets about 3 cups of food a day. Labman, on the other hand, has posted of a lab (which should be roughly the same weight) that he had that barely kept in good condition on 7 cups of food a day. The best thing to do is keep an eye on how your dog looks. Too skinny... give more food. Too fat... cut back (and that's probably because of too many treats!)

You can pretty much get one of those feeders you fill with a big sack of dry dogfood and let the dog feed ad lib, if she seems overweight eating out of boredom or getting a lot of high calorie snacks you would need to limit it. They often eat too much ifn it's a wet diet cause they like it. And don't let her snack on catfood, too high in protein for a dog could damage her kidneys.
