Need to know what type of underground gas pipe to use for outdoors ( gas line from home to meter) that would last the longest and how do I install it for best support?

Mary:

You are required to have a permit on any gas work like this and there are VERY STRICT rules regarding underground gas piping.

I must advise you to call your local plumbing inspector and ask him what he recommends in this situation.

Most likely, he will require pipe be buried to at least 12-18" underground with a TRACER wire.

He will probably tell you to use the GREEN COATED black iron pipe they sell for exactly this purpose. It is not easy to work with and requires that the green coating be ground off each end before threading each end.

If black pipe is required you will need to use black MALLEABLE fittings and he may have you apply special coating to each joint as well.

Anyway, I wish I could tell you more... but insuarace companies today are informing us that if no permit is pulled... NO HOMEOWNER INSURANCE to cover accidental fire, etc.

So, talk to the local plumbing inspector and see what he has to say. He will tell you how to bury, etc.
