2001 grand am fails to start (water damage)
I have a 2001 Grand am and I drove it through a large puddle of water last night I went this morning and it wouldn't turn over. The water did make it just underneath the door and I pushed the car to a high and dry spot. What are the possibilities of the car starting back up on it's own without involving a mechanic?

    Pretty good. Begin by:

. Checking all under-hood and under-dash fuses with a test light or multimeter:

Be thorough checking fuses or it may cost you more time and money later.

    . Checking for codes.

Well I took your advice went and baught a test light checked all three fuse boxes in the '01 grand am they are good although I noticed that the prongs on the fuses had received lots of heat they looked kind of blueish. I also checked the oil it had about 2 qts. Of water inside I replaced oil & oil filter. It still doesn't turn over I am going to wait another day and hope the starter dries out.

If I get it to turn over what should I be in the look out for. Thanks for helping me get started on this project.

Any other sugestions please let me know I know there is steps to follow to get my car back running. AT the autopart store the guys said I would be lucky if the rods weren't bent?

If you can get the starter motor to work, but the engine still doesn't start, focus on the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS). It's located low on the engine (near the crankshaft) and is prone to water damage. Before focusing on the CPS, however, be sure to check for codes.

Make sure everything dries out--you don't want to short out the computer or any other part of the electrical system.

If the starter motor doesn't even crank:

. Look for a "mega fuse," possibly on the end of the under-hood fuse box. The main wire from the alternator feeds into it.

This link may also be applicable to your situation, if you have coil-on-plugs:

The engine may be hydro-locked if you got that much water into it. Pull the plugs out and check for water.
