I am 90% sure that my new beagle pup is eating her own poop. I came home today to the a messy crate and dog but no actual piles. I did catch her licking it one day when I took her out... I thought she was just sniffing around for a place to go but she was licking her poop. Since I have taken out her bedding she has not peed in her crate but she still poops in it. I found out that she has worms this morning at the vet, he told me to feed her rice and boiled chop meat, gave us some pills for her diharia and once her stool is firm he wants us to give her the worm pill. I am assuming that the reason she is still pooping in the crate is because of the worms/diharia... she probably just can't hold it... hoping that is taken care of in the next few days, but how do I stop her from eating her poop, it makes me sick to think of it.:eek:

A phase suggests something that will quickly go away on its own. Perhaps no. This is one of the worst cases. If the dog doesn't have worms, usually it is worse on the owner than the dog. The worms are causing loose stools, accidents in the crate, and eating stools, making it harder to clean up the worms.

I would go directly to the food additives, pineapple juice or canned pumpkin in the food. There are the commercial products Forbid and Deter. You may see how it goes once the worms are cleared out and the stools back to normal. I have had the problem with several puppies. I usually manage just by cleaning up before the dog has a chance. That won't work in the crate.

Also I believe my vet told my mom that the dog should ''poop'' out the worms once given the wormer and most of the time if its like tapeworm the ''eggs'' that look like rice come out in the feces before wormer so it's a vicious cycle because if the dog has the chance to eat its own feces it can be putting the worms right back into its system. Therefor no amount of wormer will work. Out of all honesty I would find a dog sitter for when your not home so it doesn't have to stay in the cage and the sitter should clean up the feces right after . Until all the wormer has had time to work.

A temporary puppy sitter might not be a bad idea. Otherwise try to spend as much time with the dog as you can over the weekend. You need to break the chain as I suggested in my first post. Quickly cleaning up the stools does work. I should have skipped the canned pumpkin as a remedy. It could prolong the soft stool problem.

Well she went all day yesterday with out going potty in her crate. We gave her her worming pill, stool has been more firm but she was awake all night long, and I mean all night. Crying and barking for hours on end, she just wanted to play daddy and I just wanted to sleep. I am wondering if the worming pill has something to do with her sudden hyperness, I hope so I need to get some sleep. I am pretty much at my wits end with her lack of sleeping at night, I just don't get it.:(
