    Automatic Transmissions
    On FWD cars, what is the purpose of having the chose of choosing what gear like 1,2,3,or D?

    Most people will just use "D." Coming down steep grades, however, using the appropriate numbered gear will allow you to use the engine as a brake, thus saving your actual brakes from overheating and possibly going out (vapor lock). In snow and for towing, some people like using numbered gears.
