SSI benefits for child of someone on disability
Does anyone know if my child is able to collect social security benefits if her dad is now getting Disability benefits? What type of benefits would she get and how does it affect child support? Thank you

I believe that a child only qualifies for SS benefits when the parent is deceased.

If there is a divorce involved, and his income has been severely reduced, he could revisit the court and request a lower amount based upon his new circumstances.

This is not an informed answer, perhaps someone knows for sure?

I am asking because today I got a letter from the SSI office saying they needed me to contact them regarding a potential entitlement to monthly ssi benefits on her fathers social security record. To the best of my knowledge he is not dead.

A child can receive SSI benefits (Title XVI) if found disabled under the Social Security Regulations. However, there is income and resource limitations- so if a parent earns too much money or has too much money in the bank, the child would be found ineligible. The other type of disability is Child Disability Benefits (Title II), which is filed under the account of a deceased parent (wage earner). In this type of case, the child has to establish disability prior to age 22, but there is no income or resource issues. Hope this helps.
