Iron Bacteria smell in well water
Can anyone tell me how much bleach I should use to "Shock" my water well? It smells awful and have been told to "Shock" the well with bleach, but have been told conflicting thoughts on how much to use. I don't want to hurt my pump or the wires going to it, but DO want to get the water back to smelling good.
Thanks for any insght you may have.

Is it the hot or cold water that smells bad?

Mostly from the cold water line that does not go through the water softener.

Your water softener is probably removing the iron then. My grandparents lived on a farm with a well and their water smelled and left orange stains everywhere and it took a while getting used to.

Bleach is going to kill bacteria and I doubt you have that problem.

The usual problem is that the sacrificial anode in the water heater is of the wrong material for water with iron and you sometimes get a sulfur smell.

You might have to put more fixtures through the softener.
