Going to jail medicaly ill
An old friend of mine pleaded guilty to a criminal charge (not registering as a sex offender with in 5 days of moving) the sentencing has not happened yet. The next day he went to the emergency room and was diagnost with chronic heart failure, they did and emergency carotid endarterectomy and now will have to be with home health care for a very long time. What happendes to people who are very sick and going to jail?
Thank you
Teresita

Normally they go to jail, if prison, they will be in a hosptial ward or given needed treatment in their cell block ( depending on level of care)
In jails many have medical wings, others send them to other jails with proper housing, or they receive the treatement they need in their cell block.
They may ask the judge for an extended time to report to jail for the illness

They have an infirmary at the jail or they could put him on house arrest where he can stay at home but not leave without prior consent from the probation officer.

It all depends on what the Judge rules. His lawyer could suggest house arrest.

Have his attorney bring his present medical condition to the judge. Be sure that his doctor writes something if possible also for the attoney. Most judges don't like to send really sick people to jail if they can help it due to the liability issues for the jail. But this all depends on what his doctor says and what the judge determines. Also he knew the rules about checking in when moving so there should be no excuse there.

In my area the local County hospital has a wing which is nothing but prisoners - there are no stays, there is no home arrest due to illness, there is no extension.

There would have to be more than chronic heart failure and the carotid endarterectomy for him to have to be in home health care for a "very long time." This is a very, very common surgery, 1 or 2 days in the hospital, nothing strenuous for a couple of weeks. It is often done with just a local anesthetic. It cleans the plaque out of the carotid artery or arteries. Sometimes both sides are done, other times one side is done.
Does your friend have congestive heart failure or chronic heart failure? I am not aware that either requires home health care for a lengthy period. In fact, in many cases a person doesn't qualify for SSD based on either.

In my state some people get SSD just because they say their knees are bad and get a doc to verify it. But when they go to jail they are not suppose to receive their SSD for the months they are in.
In my state there are a lot of people on house arrest because the jails are too full with dads that are behind in the child support. So the real criminals are on house arrest while the dads sit it out in jail.

Having worked in the system, ( in Georgia) there are several prisons with hospital wings, and one prison just set up as a hospital facililty, they even have a wing like a nursing home for elderly patients.
I worked an AIDS ward before, where every person there had advanced AIDS, So a lot will just depend on what the persons lawyer files and what the judge thinks
