Question about citizenship

My grandmother is the daughter of a French woman. Her mother left
France when she was a teenager, and became a Guatemalan citizen. Is my
Grandmother eligible for French citizenship? If so, what does she need
To do in order to obtain it? I was also wondering if my mother (my
Grandmother's daughter) and myself would be eligible, and what we would
Need to do. My mother and I are both Guatemalan by birth.

I believe she would but it might be a bit difficult to get all the paperwork. I'm not sure about your mother and you.

I think she (your grandma) will need at least to get a copy of her birth certificate ("decret d'acte de de naissance") that you should be able to get from the townhall ("mairie") of the city where she was born. That is if there is ever one. If she was born before the war she may not have been registered at the time or archives may have been destroyed during the war (if she was born before)

You may have to hire a layer to do the research for you if you can't go there yourself...

In any case you should start by talking to the french consulate nearest to you. You can find the list of french consulate abroad here:

Hello I guess I have a similar question
I would like to know if am eligible for a french citizenship. I was born in besancon france in 1976 by non french parents who were studying and working in france at the time of my birth. I departed france with them for our home country in 1979. If I am eligible what do I need to do. I have all my birth documents

I hope I don't cause multiple eyes to roll back with this question. Remember several years back when someone said Clinton could get French citizenship because he was born in a former French colony (Arkansas)? Well, I thought this to be unlikely, but decided to snoop around to find out.

I have hit a brick wall. I would like to get French citizenship and the ability to work and live in France (or another EU country) if possible. So as a last ditch effort, I'm asking if it really is possible for me to get French citizenship because I was born in Ohio.

I'd be very surprised if it were true, or if I was born at the right time if it once was true and no longer isn't. FWIW I was born in 1970. If it is possible, is there anything beyond my birth certificate that I would need?

I posted this on one of the other threads too. I am wondering if anyone has been through the application process for French citizenship based on marriage and can tell me their experience. I applied about 16 months ago through a French embassy in the US. After a year, I received a letter requesting my parents birth and marriage certificates. I sent them, and then received a month or two later, a printout of info about me (name, date of birth, parents dates and places of birth, spouse's name and parents and date of birth, etc.) to sign and return. Which I did. I'm just trying to figure out how many more stages there are and how long it's likely to take. Very much appreciate any advice anyone can offer. Thanks.

I heard that if you were born in a former colony of France (like Clinton), you had to speak French fluently and own property to gain citizenship.

I'm afraid that the answer is negative. You cannot gain a French
Citizenship based on your birth in France or on the fact that you
Lived there for a year and a half afterwards.

The French law (Civil Code, Articles 17 and henceforth) grants French citizenship:

- To a child born to French parents; adopted by French parents; born
To unknown parents (abandoned); born to stateless parents or to
Parents who could not grant the child their nationality.

- " Every child born in France of foreign parents acquires French
nationality on his coming of age where, at that time, he has his
residence in France and has had his usual residence in France for a
continuous or discontinuous period of at least five years, from the
age of eleven.

The tribunaux d'instance, local authorities, public bodies
and services and especially educational establishments are obliged to
inform the public, and in particular those persons to whom paragraph 1
applies, of the provisions in force in matters of nationality. The
requirements as to that information shall be prescribed by a decree in
Conseil d'État."

from the age of sixteen claim French nationality by declaration, in
the way laid down in Articles 26 and following where, at the time of
his declaration, he has in France his residence and has had his usual
residence in France for a continuous or discontinuous period of at

Under the same terms, French nationality may be claimed,
on behalf of the minor child born in France of foreign parents, from
the age of thirteen and with his personal consent, in which event the
requirement of usual residence in France should be fulfilled from the
age of eight."

Hi, I have a similar question.
My Father was a french citizen, his mother was French. However he studied in UK and when he was 18 he applied for and was granted British Citizenship, he then failed to renew his French Citizenship so he would not have to join the French Military.
Is It possible for me to apply for french citizenship, if he reapplys?

Hi all,

I have a French father and a Dutch mother and have always had a french Pasport/ID.
I got married some time ago to a Turkish citizen and we now live in Ireland.
Could my Turkish husband apply for a French passport?
Does anybody know how this works or where I can find any information about this?
