    Hi Renee:

    Wonder if you have a name and or model number of the particular shower valve you have there (look on face plate). If not, maybe you could post a picture to this site..

    Basically, what you will need to do is to shut the hot and cold water to your shower valve (separate shutoffs, or may need to shut the water main shutoff). Then you will remove the shower valve handle and faceplate to gain access to the cartridge assembly or the stem and washers inside.

    You will remove parts, clean parts, purge valve of sediment, replace parts.. see if works. If not, will need to REPLACE parts.

    That is just a rough draft for you there. Get us name/model/pic. Of shower valve and we will see if we have a specification sheet to help you in removing/reassembling shower valve.
