Windows will not startup, BOOT.ini file obscured
    Hello all,

My issue is one of dual partitions... or was anyway.

I had the problem where every time I started my computer it would make me select an operating system to start. The choices would be Windows XP Home, or Windows XP Setup. Almost as if I had windows already on one partition, and was in the middle of adding another on a second partition but did not complete it.

I always just selected the Windows XP Home and got onto the desktop. Well, eventually I got sick of in and searched online for advice on how to fix this. The advice I followed advised me to edit my BOOT.ini file in notepad, and delete the line that said something like "multi(0)(1)default(0)"... or something to that effect. So I remove that line of code from the file on notepad, and restart my computer to see if it would fix the issue.

It did not, in fact it made it worse.

Because NOW when I start up instead of it looking like this:

Please choose an operating system to start:

    Microsoft Windows XP Home
    Microsoft Windows XP Setup

    NOW it looks like this:

Please choose an operating system to start:

    /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
    Microsoft Windows XP Setup

So... if I choose Setup it takes me there and then my comp just randomly shuts down. But, if I select the first line, the /noexecute line... my computer just shuts restarts and does not take me to my Windows desktop. So now my problem is even worse because I cannot even access my desktop anymore, and I'm stuck in this bootup screen crap to no avail.

I think I have to edit the BOOT.ini file and replace the line of code I deleted so that I can at least get access to my desktop; basically undoing what I did- but I have NO IDEA how to accomplish this from the boot menu, or if you even can. Someone said I have to go into Recovery Mode to edit the BOOT.ini file, but IDK how to do that either. I DO have the original Windows XP CD, OEM version, if that helps.

    WHAT DO I DO?

If anyone can help I'd be tremendously thankfull!

Unless you really know what you are doing, never edit the registry or the Boot, ini file.

Try holding "F8" and letting the PC start in Safe Mode.

One you get the system up, go to the control; panel, "System" then System Restore.

Restore your system back to a date before you edited the Boot.ini. Once restored, the system should cause you to restart and Start again
