    Mismatched system
I havea 3 ton AC system and gas furnace in my home. The AC is old and broken and I am looking to replace it. Most techs that come out recommend a 3.5 or 4 ton unit. Only one person has said anything about the furnace. If my furnace is only designed to push 3 tons, can I get a larger outdoor AC unit or do I have to replace the furnace also?

Well,, you could change the blower motor so it can handle a larger a/c unit without replacing the furnace, but,why are they wanting you to go bigger? Have you added on to the house, Did away with some insulation or something ? Has something been done to cause the house to not be cool enough with the 3 ton unit? The newer ,higher seer condensers do a much better hjob than the older ones and cheaper. You need to be careful to not over do it with a/c you can get too much

    wmproop,

No additions. A couple of guys are saying that I need a bigger system based on the number of outlets inside. One guy did say that 3 ton was adequate, but I should put in a couple dampers to get more cool air upstairs. This also happens the be the guy that did the most thorough inspection of my system.
