The song is "Joyous Flame" by Googie and Tom Coppola. Album: Shine the Light of Love. Label: Columbia Records. Release Date: 1980.

This song was a hit in the Detroit area, made famous on the radio by Mojo on WGPR and also at Spanky's Nightclub by DJ Scott Gordon.

Unfortunately the song is very hard to find, but if you look hard, typically those who really want it will find it.

When originally released, Columbia had trouble understanding how to market a Gospel record in a Pop world (strange since most people heard the song as an R&B record anyway). So, Columbia essentially put the album on a shelf for three years to collect dust, and then finally released it in 1980. Problem was, Columbia never gave it the promotional push it deserved in order to make it a national hit. The main reason it reached hit status in Detroit was that Mojo had total freedom to play what he wanted on-the-air, whereas virtually no DJ ever has that ability - especially after circa 1990. Mojo discovered it (though I don't know how he found it, considering almost 100 records per-week were sent to radio stations for airplay consideration back then). According to folks I've spoken with, Bruce Lundvall at Columbia Records was the main reason the record did not get the attention it deserved. Bruce just didn't understand it.

In today's world, where Gospel and Christian music have a much larger audience, "Joyous Flame" would have stood a far bigger chance at becoming a national hit record.

Oh, and the couple, (Googie and Tom Coppola) were white and married. Unfortunately and sadly, Googie is no longer with us.
