    Expansion Tank for Water Heater
    Is a new expansion tank required by code when replacing an existing water heater. The existing water heater has an expansion tank that is 6 years old.

    Code does not require a new expansion tank to be installed at change out of new water heater. Code just requires a relief valve to be installed and piped to within 12" of the floor with a BALD end of pipe (so knowone can cap this off! ). In some states a vacuum breaker is also required to be installed at the cold water inlet to the heater.

    You will know when it is time to replace the expansion tank because the relief valve will start to spit water out periodically.
