Replace parts inside toilet tank .
Feel I need to replace the parts inside my toilet tank...
After water has stopped, I cannot hear anything, but I sometimes notice a trickle of
Water still coming into the bowl.
I would like advice on best brand name to purchase so I can replace myself.
Lowe's and Home Depot are in my area.
Thanks
Danna

Whoa! Let's not get hasty here. All it sounds like is a bad flapper. Take your finger and run it around the flat part of the flapper. If it's wavy or has rough edges it 's faulty and should be replaced. Let me show you how. With the flapper seated the linkage wants to have 1/4" of play. Too much play and the flapper doesn't get pulled back enough giving you a short flush. Too tight and it lets water seep past the flapper. I adjust the chain by the link and if it needs fine tuning, I bend the flush lever rod a bit untill I have the desired play in the linkage. One more thing about a flapper. you will see where the old flapper hooks onto the base of the white overflow tube. On a older type with no hooks the flapper has a ring that slips down over the overflow tube to the seat. If your tank has hooks, take a sharp knife or scissors and cut the neoprene ring off on the marks provided and hook the flapper on the hooks. Leaving the ring on will interfere with the flush. The water level in your tank should be 3/8 to 1/2" below the top of the overflow tube when the tank's filled. And the little tube wants to run from the ballcock and connect to the white overflow tube.. Good luck and if this doesn't get it then ckick on back. Tom

First let's determine whether you need to do anything. In a toilet you have two things, a fill valve or ballcock and a flush valve or flapper. Remove the tank top. In the center of the tank you should see pipe about 1" in diameter, that's the overflow pipe. The water level should be about 1" below the top of that pipe. If it is, your fill valve or ballcock is functioning properly. Hold down the float to the fill valve until the water runs into the overflow pipe. Down underneath the tank is a stop valve by which you turn off the water to the toilet. After filling the tank to the overflow level turn off that stop valve. Wait 30 minutes then check the water level again. If the water level is still at the top of the overflow pipe the flush valve is OK. If it has dropped the flush valve is leaking.
When a toilet has a defective fill valve the water will run continuously, when the flush valve is defective the water will run for a short periods every few minutes.
FluidMaster is probably the most popular brand of replacement parts.

Thanks for the thorough explanation , guys.
I do have the hooks... no ring on flapper.
There is a line on overflow tube and water stops at line ,
Approx 1" from top of tube.
After flush, when I can hear that water has stopped filling/running...
Looking into bowl, there must be a very small amount of water coming in.
I can see the water moving but cannot hear any running water.
With my computer not far from bath,
I have heard as much as a 30 minutes later a sound...
Such as water has stopped running.
Look into the bowl, and water is not moving.

After a flush there's always a small amount of water left running down the overflow tube into the rim and bowl. This is normal and shouldn't worry you. If you think you may have a small leak then tomight put some food coloring in the tank and check the bowl in the morning. Good luck, Tom

Is that little tube from the fill valve to the overflow pipe stuck down in the overflow pipe or attached to the top of the overflow pipe?

At Home Depot or Lowe's purchase the proper little clip for securing it to the top of the overflow tube. That's the reason for the water going into the bowl. May need to clip off a couple of inches.

Thanks Harold
I'll pick one up at Lowe's...
But what's the difference if it 3" into the overflow tube or 1" ?

The water that goes through the tube is the water that refill the bowl. When the toilet shuts off the last little bit of water flows out. If the end of the tube is below the water line, that water pulls more water in behind it out of the tank. Called syphoning. That continues until the water in the tank reaches the same level as the end of the tube. Sometimes that is enough to make the toilet come on again and refill the tank. Then the process starts all over again.
