The first is the added weight of the body which causes extra strain on the heart which needs to provide muscles with enough energy to move the extra weight. A high percentage of fat ussally also means that your LDL (low density lipoprotein) is probably high.

According to LDL and HDL Cholesterol: What's Bad and What's Good?
When a lot of (bad) cholesterol circulates in the blood, it can slowly build up in the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain. Together with other substances, it can form plaque, a thick, hard deposit that can narrow the arteries and make them less flexible. This condition is known as atherosclerosis. If a clot forms and blocks a narrowed artery, heart attack or stroke can result.

And we all know stroke and heart attacks are bad for the heart.

The above post is spot on concerning the events of heart damage tied to atherosclerosis.

The only add id mention is not all fats are "equal" with omega-3, and mono and polyunsaturated fats being more healthy. These can actually lower your cholesterol. So a healthy diet doesn't avoid fats... it has healthier fats.

The trans fatty acids and saturated fats increase cholesterol and your risk for heart disease.

So it isn't just about fats being bad for you... its about what fats are worse, and which fats help.
