    A student buys a book for $12.00 and pays 7% sales tax. How much does the student pay in tax?

    Here's one way to approach the problem. There's actually multiple ways to solve it.

    1. Figure out what 1% of $12.00 is. You do that by moving the decimal point 2 places to the left. That would be $0.12.
    Multiply $0.12 by 7 to figure out what 7% is... that would be $0.84.

    The student would pay $0.84 in tax.
