Married in Aug07, worked for 5 months, separate/joint?
    Hello,

I was working in US from feb 07 to Jul 07 on L1 visa. I went back to India to get married in Aug 07 and came back in Nov 07 as a dependent with L2 visa.
My husband is on L1 visa and he came to US in March '07.

    1. I wasn't working after Jul 07. Please let me know the pros and cons of filing Joinlty and Separately

    2. Should I apply as 'Single' since I was earning only when I was single?

    3. Can I be claimed as a dependent by my husband when filing Separately? In that case, with what status should I file the returns.

Your husband has completed SPT in 2007. So you can file resident tax return as Married Filing Jointly. It does not matter on what date in 2007 you got married or for how many days you were in the U.S.

Thank you. I got the same opinion after some more research.

I have an estimate of my returns from a tax consultant, but he is so confused and making me confuse and also, he is charging too much for filing.
I would like to have a second opinion, and please let me know with whom I can get a free estimate of my returns. I tried doing it online... but its taking lot of time to understand everything there. Please help me.

You should contact [email protected] for professional help.

You will file Form 1040. You must also report any foreign income for 2007. If you paid taxes in the foreign country, you will get credit for it by filing Form 1116.
