    Outlet distance from washer drain
    How far should the washer outlet plug be from the washer drain.I installed an Oatey washer drain but do not know how far to put the outlet away,is it OK to put the outlet on the same stud as the box for the drain?

    Since we're asking questions,

    Don't GFCI's and motors not get along very well? I thought I'd heard that the surge at startup of a washing machine motor could trip the ground fault.

    True?

    True, but not as much today. Newer GFIs have much better resistance to this.
    If you have an old GFI that is causing trouble replacing it is a cheap test to see if that is the problem.

    I need to add, according to the newest codes, the ONLY times a washer requires a GFI receptacle is if it is in an unfinished basement, a garage, or within 6' of a laundry sink.

    I believe you are confusing the rules. It happens! You may be thinking about NEC 210.8 (A)7: Laundry, utility, and wet bar sinks-where the receptacles are installed within 6 feet of the outside edge of the sink



    Chignut, Stan is correct, there is no distance requirement for your install.

    Not true!

    If the motor is tripping the GFCI, then there may be a problem with the motor.
