    I need more insultation
My house was built in 1950, one-story, 2 bedroom. The insulation (blown-in kind) in the unfinished attic is pretty low and my gas bill has been going up and up.

My question is this: will it be better to get more blown-in insulation or the batts of insulation? Which costs more and which will last longer? I know the blown-in insulation settles over time, since that it what has happened. I have obviously little knowledge in this area and just need suggestions.

If the windows in your house haven't been updated, I would say that you are losing most of your heat through the single pane windows. Fix those first. I just did mine one at a time and the house is now warm and cozy. My house was built in 48

The previous owner put new storm windows on the entire house, so I don't think that is the main culprit. Also, my water heater is old... see my previous question.:)

Test the insulation you have now. My point was that your benefit from adding insulation to the attic would probably not help any. There are several other areas to consider investing in a house that old to produce efficiency.

If I was going to put more insulation in my attic, I would use batts.
