    Theft under 5000
Hi I just got arrested for committing shoplifting under 5000

And the police office told me to attend a court meeting

And this is my first offense

I want to what is my current situation?

The cop told me to call legal aid and tell them the situation

Will there be a high chance I will get let go for nothing?

Or how serious can this get?

    Please reply ASAP

    Thanks!

No you will not be let go for nothing. However, you will likely get probation.

Umm but does probation mean criminal record?
Because I seriously cannot get one
But the cop did say if I call legal aid and then go to court with him
My chances are very high of not getting anything serious...

Yes, it means - unless the record is sealed - that you were found guilty and given probation (and possibly a fine) as a sentence. That's the price of committing a crime -

What did Legal Aid say? They are more familiar with local laws and the situation and should be able to advise you based on experience.

You don't say where you are, but the charge indicated Canada. Canada has a diversion program for first offenders. Your record is sealed and you are put on probation. You have to perform some community service and restitution. But once you complete that satisfactorily, your record is cleared. As the legal aid atty about it.

Well you should have thought of that before you committed theft.

I mean I think I can put on an innocent look
And swear I won't do it again and that it was a stupid decision
Because I don't my life to be ruined over such a stupid thing
My chances of getting nothing serious such as record is very high right?

No one can predict what a court will do and if you come across as insincere as you come across here, a judge may decide to really punish you.

No I will show that I am really sorry for my crime
How am I trying to act insincere if I say I'm sorry?
    I really am though
So I just hope I will not be punished for something I will never do again

Yes there is a diversion program in Canada, and it seems like you would be appropriate for it since you are a first time offender. Where are you in Ontario? I believe the rest of canada calls this program the "alternative measures program." (in case you have not been able to find it). I imagine if you confess your sincerity, like you are showing now, you will be given a conditional discharge or contrary to what has been stated before, be recomeded by the crown to the alternative measures program (diversion). Set a pre-trial with the crown and really feel sorry. Best of luck.

You said you thought you could put on an innocent look and that made you sound insincere.
