    Heat Pump Efficiency
Getting ready to replace the split system in my home (current system is 23 year old York with traditional resistance heating in an all electric home) Have no direct experience with heat pumps and wanted to know if they are truly superior (in cost to operate and long term maintenance) to traditional resistance heating. I've talked to some that swear by them and others that say efficiency is affected by geography (i.e. outside humidity, severity of winter termperatures, etc.). I live in east Texas which has fairly high humidity but winter termperatures rarely drop below upper 20s) Heat pumps run more but wanted to know the TRUE cost of ownership (which is based on potential monthly electric savings and potential maintenance issues). Also, any thoughts on York vs Trane? My current York has had no real problems for 23 years but don't know if I was just lucky.

Your area of Texas is perfect for heat pump use. It will save you a good amount on your utility bill.

Both York and Trane are good.

23 years with no problems is pure luck.

Contact your local utility for the energy savings part.Every area of the country is different.

I am looking for the efficiency differences between a water-to-air heat pump versus a standard air-to-air heat pump. Is it worth the eletrical savings to go with one versus the other. I have heard that the water-to-air heat pump is much more effiicient but can't find any concrete data.

Hi The A/C works great but in the morning when its cool outside and I switch on the Heat the indoor unit makes a clicking sound and the fan stays off - after about 8 minutes I switch to A/C I get a rush of ice cold air along with some mist. Seems like when I switch to heat the indoor unit...

AC -- wetting cooling fins improve heat exchange efficiency? [ 7 Answers ]

Would wetting outdoor cooling fins improve the efficiency of an AC unit? The unit in question is a central AC unit, but presumably the principle would remain the same for window units. AC cooling fins aid in heat exchange by exploiting their large surface area. Would wetting the fins to...
