Homophobia in America- is it a battle we can win?
I've been thinking the past few days about homophobia in the U.S. gay marriage, civil unions and the like... I've also been reading a of anti-gay 'statistics' and websites written by people with such a deep hatred for homosexuals. It saddens me to know that, for all else that I am as a person, I can be hated for who I love. I am summed up by what I do in my bedroom, and innaccurate generalizations are made about the rest of my life-
One comment on a message board read that 'homosexuals should just be grateful that they are no longer imprisoned in the U.S.'... grateful? You've got to be kidding!
And I'm just getting concerned... the more that gay people push for equality, the more conservatives push for limitations on our right to marry... the more hatred it stirs up... so much of the fight against homosexuality comes from an argument that claims to have religion and God on their side.
What do you all think- is it possible for public opinion to change, for laws to change, for hatred to end? Or are we just fooling ourselves?

Hi Margog,
First, I think you are a beautiful loving being and if you are going to be hated for loving someone my goodness, be proud of who you are.
I love you and your entire community in my heart. Stay off those hateful sites. They are people so filled with ugliness they have to take it out on someone, anyone, and the Gay community is a vulnerable target.
It angers me to no end. I am not gay, but I would not be ashamed if I were. Ashamed to love another human being, oh if only we all had the trait to be ashamed of.
You will have the most peace and happiness when you discontinue caring about what hateful people think of you. I bet if you met them in person, you really wouldn't care to have them in your company anyway nor would you care what they think.
One of the things that I love about the gay community is how they take care of each other. Also the incredible charitable works that the community does. Bless all of you for doing the beautiful and giving things that you do.
As far as gay marriage and getting those in charge to allow you to have a right that the rest of America has, they would tell me no once and then guess what... poohey on them.
I know to be legal bound together has importance as far as health care and things such as that. But I would do my best within the law, get married if that's what I wished within the community, and get my legal things in order as much as the law allows and still hold out hope that someday, the ugly in people will disappear. It's not many or at least I hope it's not.
Don't dare stop fighting for your rights because it may cause others discomfort. You just remember Rosa Parks, bless her soul, and thank God she never gave up her seat.
It saddens me and sickens me that one could be so full of hate to harm another person's soul. Feel sorry for them, because it is my belief, that God smiles and shines on those who love and is not pleased with those who harbor hate in their heart and judge.
Bless you and love you.

Hi there , if every one of us searched the web I'm sure there is something bad said about all of us for one reason or another,my Mum always said if you can't say something good don't say any think at all, how right she was (bless her) I personally have mixed views but on the whole if one person truly is in love with another no matter what their genda then who's business is it anyway, what goes on between two people in the bedroom department is simply that... between those two people.
Some people maybe old school have been raised to follow certain paths not necessary religious people but it would be things that would have been drummed into them throughout their up bringing, this is what some parents and alike would have inflicted therefore this is what they believe is right.
I actually work with a gay person we get along just fine and have done for a few years now the fact that they are gay is not even an issue.
Some of the human race can be very cruel, I remember when I was a kid,if you saw different races going out together they would be pointed at by most people on the street , I remember asking my parents about it they were clearly very embarrassed and didn't know what to say I was only about 8 at the time so they kind of fobbed me off , like parents do.
It seems the same thing goes on but it's a different issue.
At the end of the day whether we'r black white yellow gay lesbian heterosexual able bodied or disabled we are all part of the human race, all our bits are the same , we came in this world with nothing and we will leave with nothing.
Margog always say to yourself.. I'm as good as anyone but I'm not better than anyone.
You are an equal to everyone we are all the same but different
Takecare Blessings..

Well first how narrow minded of you, homophobic ? Pure bull a made up word that people who are against natural morals have made up to attack those that stand up for religoius morals, for morals from the Jewish and even Muslim traditons and the christian faith.
When will the telling of the moral truths stop, NEVER, The outcry of the moral slide our nation has taken will never end. The sexual perversions may have been forced upon us by the courts ( but not by vote of the people) but it does not ever have to be accepted as a proper, a right and a acceptable life style to those who wish to proclaim God's will and laws.
So if you are ashamed to hear the truth, ashamed to know that a large majority of the US finds this behavior sickening, well too bad, that is really has it is. Many will not go on public record saying it, since the politically correct put fear into peoples hearts.
So why should I stop being who I am, if you think it is OK for you to be who you are. I find sad that I have to explain to my son why two men would be holding hands and kissing, and yes if I could I would make such public displays of homosexual behavior illegal.

Fr-chuck thank you for your opinion which as a member of the human race we are all entitled too.
However I happen to think there is enough sadness in this world with out inflicting it on each other, what makes any of us the right to become judge or jury, certainly not me or you.
There is only one person in this conversation who is narrow minded and it's definitely not me.You are imposing religious law on people who may or may not choose to live their lives in that way and you have the right to do so but people will go their own way and do not necessarily have to follow because you say it is the right way, why can't you live and let live instead of causing problems for people who are nothing to do with the way you live your life .
There are ways of explaining things to children the world and society have come a long way since I was a kid they understand more than you think they do and most kids are more resilient than you think.
It will not matter what agument is put to you concerning this matter you are of one opinion so we will have to agree to disagree and leave it at that.
I'm not ashamed of a single thing in my whole life as I have been asked for help many times by all kinds of members of society having many years ago been a councillor in the prisons where you can imagine prisoners of serious crime offences were imprisoned did I turn the other cheek... NO so do not preach to me about the rights and wrongs in society
We are none of us perfect least of all myself but I do the very best that I can do for my fellow man no matter who or what they are or what they may have done in their passed
That is what the good guy upstairs tells us... but of course you know that it's a shame you can't do the same.
In case your wandering I am a christian and I have children who are very well balance concerning moral issues there are no secrets in our family we discuss everything even down to personal problems and we deal with them honestly and openly which in my book is the only way to be .

I think homophobia will continue to die out as fundiEv Christianity continues to disgrace itself in its quest to be a national political party.
Jesus did not want his followers to be officials in governing people... he condemned the Pharisees and Sadducees, he chased the money lenders out of the temple... used words like nest of vipers!. hypocrites!! Render to Caesar what is Caesar's to God what is God's!!
Jesus preached about the Kingdom of Heaven, the Kingdom of God and this Kingdom had nothing to do with governing others... it was about loving and helping others face to face. NOTHING ABOUT how to be divisive toward others, not inclusive. NOTHING.
Check the Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes. Jesus was about all inclusive love, not about creating outsiders to hate.
Christianity in America would fail and disappear if they didn't have to create and maintain hatred for groups such as homosexuals, minorities, and all their assorted prejudices. That explains that most are unable to follow Jesus admonition to clean up their own act and be a loving Christian... but, must fuel their religious feelings by divisiveness and negative non-Jesus like propaganda.

Jesus would have forgave those that wanted to be forgiven, he loved the sinner but did not want them to continue to sin, he would have most likely reached out and cured them perhaps.
Or he would have as he did the women that committed adultry, her sins were forgiven, and he told her to go and sin no more, he accepted her as she was, but then wanted her to change.
So as I mentioned the other other Posts I fully believe that a gay person can be saved, being a sinner does not stop that. But have they repented of their sin, if they say, I am a sinner, but I can not stop and help the way I am?? No, they want the bible re-written to show it is OK to be gay. And the christian faith has little to do with politics, there are some far right that are ( I am for Obama this year at this point) but you have to address all the Christians except the far left who wish to do away wiith the idea of sin and repentance from the faith.
It may become more and more politically incorrect, it may be forced underground to teach the truth, as it was in Russia for years but often being prosecuted makes them stronger.

You know, I was going to come in here and post something about how with time things change, because it wasn't that long ago that we treated blacks as second-class citizens through our laws but now we have changed those laws and in general society treats people equally. You can also see this shift in women's rights. We still have far to go for absolute equality, but we're a heck of a lot better off than we were before.
Yeah, I was going to come in here and say all that... that I have hope... that I think things will change in the future in small increments... but then I read Fr_Chuck's post and it made me lose all hope in equality for all people. Because as long as there are masses of people who insist on imposing their religion on the rest of us, we will never, ever, all be equal. It must be nice to sit atop such a high horse of morality all the time and see nothing wrong with denying fellow humans common rights because they are different. Religion of love indeed.
