When I press the remote the red led comes on but I have to almost put the remote right up next to the light for it to work... it will not work from any distance.. I looked inside the remote and saw the numbers and moved the toggles all in the up position, but I do not know where the receiver is located in the ceiling fan/light to confirm what numbers they are on...

Well you are going to have to find the receiver now if you do not recall the exact position of every dip switch in the remote. They both must match 100% . The receiver is usually in the decorative shell right at the ceiling. Drop that housing and llok for a small box with sveral wires coming from it. Match the switches and then try a new battery in the remote.
