Name change: what do I do?
I am 18 and I have lived in Texas most of my life, but I was born in California. Anyhow, I went to get an ID and the person attending me told me I could not get one because the name on my social security and birth certificate does not match. I am not going to use my real name, but for example, the name on my Los Angeles birth certificate reads "Richard Robert Smith Johnson", Smith is my fathers last name and Johnson my mothers last name. Both of my parents are married so Smith should be my actual last name right? Since his last name is in the middle, the person at DPS says that the name reads like a middle name and not a last name.

And on my social security, my name is correct, it says "Richard Robert Smith".

I was born in Los Angeles, California, and for some reason my mom named me with both her and my fathers last name, hers being the last name on my birth certicate.

On my social security I have my name as it should be, where I have my fathers last name.

    So what do I do?

I went through school with my dads last name and all my school records have me with my fathers last name. So do I change my name on my birth certificate, or on social security?

How do I go through changing the name on my birth certificate if I am in Texas?

    How long will it take?

    Thank you

I think you should be able to take the birth certificate to the social security as proof for wanting to 'fix' the name on your social security card. I always heard that you can change a social security name as long as you sign that it is NOT for fraudulent purposes.
