Peroxide taste is normal... although try your best not to taste too much of it.

Swallowing the gel... how much do you actually swallow? Is it in large quantities?

Drink water... WITH the gel? Do you rinse your mouth before you drink this water or do you drink water while you have the whitening strips in your mouth?

Do your best to minimize the amount of gel you ingest.

You shouldn't be drinking anything while you have the strips on your teeth. I'm not familiar with the Equate brand of strips but I've tested the Crest Whitening Strips myself and found that there really wasn't a lot of extra gel on them and no chance of swallowing any of it.
Try to wear the strips at a quiet time of the day. Limit talking to anyone while you have them on so there's less chance of extra gel oozing into your mouth.

Perhaps you should try a different brand that doesn't taste so much like peroxide.
