Being a parent to a teen is a real test of character. When you were younger, they didn't have to deal with hair, clothes or your opinions so much. It was easier then, for you too. The age you are is an age of both discovery and growing independence. Some say it's like the terrible twos, only worse because a child is more likely to hurt herself.

You parents have both been your age. They wore their hair in ways that displeased their parents I'd bet. At this point, you are discovering who you are. You are getting ready to be an adult. They need to listen to your thoughts. You need to respect their rules.

It's scary for them to let you go, you are their child. They want you to be safe and warm. Acting independent without talking to them about what you're feeling is like walking in an unfamiliar room, in the dark.

Use "I" statements and a calm tone. Tell them "I feel like you don't care about me anymore when you say you liked me better when I was younger. This is me now, and I want us to get along. What can I do to help?"
