Furnace from cool air to lukewarm with hot air going up the chimney
I have a Goodman furnace that is not keeping my house warm. It runs 24-7 and it is barely 60 degrees in here!
Here's what happens: When I turn up the thermostat, first the blower comes on and circulates completely COLD air throughout the house, then I hear the furnace do something and after a few minutes lukewarm air begins to move through the ducts. It never gets WARM. If I leave it set at 68 degrees, it runs continuously without shutting off, but the house won't get above 62 degrees or so unless it is at least 40 degrees outside. Today I felt the ductwork going from the furnace to the vents in the home, and they are barely warm to the tough. I tried the duct going up the furnace, and it was so HOT I could barely touch it! It seems that it is sending the warmest air up the chimney while it blows barely warm air in the house. If I leave the thermostat set at 60 degrees, it never blows warm air, but keeps that cold air coming through the house. I do live in a rental house, and my landlord thinks because it eventually warms the house a little if you leave it running 24-7 that it must be OK. Can anyone help? Thank you. |

I was hoping to get some idea of what the problem may be before contacting someone. My landlord should pay for repairs, but since she does not believe there is a problem, she won't call anyone.
Most of the time it is 50 degrees in here, and it is unbearable. Does this sound like any kind of a common problem? It is a natural gas forced air Goodman furnace, and I don't see a model number on it. It is clearly making heat because the exhaust duct going up the chimney is very hot. |

Just as hvac1000 said it would be very hard, or close to impossible to analyze your problem without looking at the furnace directly, but the way you described things it sounds like it could possibly and this is just a blind guess but it sounds like you could have duct issues. This is only a guess you really need someone to look at the system before diagnosing a problem. YOU CAN GO ONLINE TO "Angie's List. com" for a list of reputable contractors in yor area.
