Debt Collector & Credit Report show different Balance
Hello, I searched before I posted sorry if this kind of situation was posted before

Can a debt collector change the balance owed on a debt. I stupidly made a $1,000 payment without checking my credit report and was told over the phone along with a letter over the mail that I owed $2,127, we negotiated a settlement of $1,650 with me paying $1,000 last month and the remainding balance this month but when I checked my credit report the charge off says $1368 and the high balance says $1,540. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. My quick reaction with paying was because a lien was put on my account... (this is an old debt but not old enough for the statute of limitations in my state NY). My next payment is due tomorrow...

If this was an account that had interest like a credit card they are allowed to continue to add interest once it gets passed to a collection agency.

Try asking them to explain the difference but I'd just pay the $650 and be done with it, if you can prove they charged more than they should have you can take them to civil court once its all paid and the file is closed.

Thanks for the reply, one last thing after I make payment would you recommend me asking him to remove this debt from my credit report rather then leave it as paid or settled to improve my credit score, I was reading debt cures and he says to do just that... (I've been trying to educate myself as much as possible about all this the past month) and yes it's a credit card...
