Social sec. tax and Medicare tax
    Hello.

I have read some of the similar questions here, but I could not find the exactly same question I have.

My former employer forgot to deduct social sec. and medicare tax from my salary and my last salary statement does not show any of dudction of social sec. and medicare tax, but only federal tax. However, on W-2 that I just received, the federal tax I paid was divided into federal, social sec. and medicare tax.

I asked my former employer why my last salary statement federal tax and W2 federal tax do not match and their answer was

"*** (company name) requested the payroll company to deduct all applicable taxes, which then included Medicare and Social Security taxes, to be withheld from your pay check. Somehow, this didn't happen"

My status is H-1b visa holder.

Also, they did not notify me anything regarding this mistake. If I did not ask them, I did not know that Social sec. and Medicare tax were not deducted.

Am I responsible to pay all these taxes now? Because they divided the federal tax I paid (or I thought I paid) into 3 (federal, social sec. and medicare tax), it shows I owe a lot of amount to IRS.

    Any comment would be appreciated.

Yes, if they did not property withhold them, that does not mean you don't owe them.
