I noticed that my newly installed toilet seemed to be a little loose on the flange and used a wrench to snug it up. The nut on one side tightened fine but on the other side, the bolt pulled through a rusted flange (actually a metal collar).
The problem came in trying to replace the metal flange. The 6 screws that hold it to the concrete foundation seem to be only mounted in concrete. As a result, they would not turn and the heads had to be broken to get the flange collar off.

My question... do these screws thread to something below the concrete or will I need to use a masonary drill to make new holes and thread something else to hold the new flange.

I bought an ABS flange that will connect in the closet bend (with a bit of work). Perhaps that is the way to do it since the new ABS flange has no threads.

Am I making this too complicated?

You should be able to install a toilet falnge repair kit, about $6.

Hi wevvie... hey just purchase a closet repair ring, a pair of 5/16" johhnie bolts and a wax ring with horn. You will definetely need to secure the ring to the concrete so buy some concrete anchors and screws or similar anchors and set the new repair ring so johhnie bolts line up centered on flange (johhnie bolts will slide into side of the closet ring and lock under the lip of flange... if they don't slide in then put them in under the ring before you secure the ring to floor). Then install toilet as usual.

If you try to install an ABS type over the old closet flange.. even though metal ring is gone.. your new flange will be to high off floor and toilet will sit off floor... so try the closet repair ring first/toilet flange repair kit (as ballengerb1 called it). Good luck!
