I have put in a new CD driver a few years ago and it has worked up until now. It doesn't want to read music CD's or blank ones. Can anyone let me know what is goiong on and how I can fix it? I have went to the Device Manager and I have unistalled the hardware and reinstalled it but still no luck.

CD readers are delicate. You just may have had yours go kaput if you already put in the hardware. Try reinstalling the drivers and see if that solves the problem. If it does not then you'll have to get another one. Essentially you cannot fix them once the eye goes. You just have to replace it. Not a major production either. I had a CD that I replaced with a DVD CD read/write combo and that solved my problem for about $10 more than just a plain CD reader would have cost me. Shop around. I got an LG over a year ago and I'm happy with LG. Also, do not push the door closed EVER. Always use the little button to open and close the door. It makes it easier on the reader.

Try this, it works most of the time and won't hinder your PC whatsoever by doing this

Go to start then run -
Type regedit in the run box
Click on edit and then click on find
In box, type lowerfilters
If lowerfilters is found, right click on it and choose delete then yes
Do the same for upperfilters
Close regedit, reboot and try cd again

Just curious -- what's the lowerfilters and upperfilters? And is it appropriate to hijack someone else's thread?

(I recently had a problem with my DVD drive. There was never a consensus whether it was software or hardware, and I knew I'd never know until I reinstalled Windows clean at some point. It was software. I did always wonder if Windows mucked up something in the registry or something, cause just inunstalling & reinstalling the software did nothing.)
